Dorothy Vacek will be celebrated from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Corsicana Public Library.

Vacek is a former high school home economics teacher, who has been involved in a series of community service efforts, including the Chamber of Commerce’s Tourism Committee, the Navarro County Youth Expo, and the American Heart Association.

The Wednesday event will feature sandwiches and snacks courtesy of the Agricultural Workers Mutual Auto Insurance Company, where she was a board member.

A city proclamation declaring it Dorothy Vacek Day will be read by Mayor C.L. “Buster” Brown, and City Councilman Stephen Andrews will also speak.

“She’s part of the reason I ended up being a councilman in Corsicana,” Andrews said. “She was a Home Ec teacher, and I always found my way into her room and always talked about politics. I said ‘I’m going to come back here and run for something,’ and lo and behold, here we are.”

In May 2008 Vacek was named a Senior Texan Volunteer of the Year for Navarro County, and in January 2006, she received the Image Maker Award from the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce.

She has been a volunteer with Food for Fitness, American Heart Association, Heart Walk, Corsicana Chamber of Commerce’s tourism committee, Corsicana Downtown Association and the James L. Collins Catholic School Foundation.

Dorothy and Jerome Vacek moved to Corsicana in 1966, and she taught home economics with the school district until her retirement in 2005. She currently runs an antiques shop in downtown Corsicana.
