Longtime radio personality Mike O’Daniel drowned Saturday at Richland Chambers Lake. O’Daniel, 61, had been a mainstay at KBEC Radio in Waxahachie since 1986.

Navarro County Justice of the Peace Bob McQuary ruled the death an accidental drowning Monday morning after O’Daniel’s body was recovered near Pelican Isle by search crews at 6:30 a.m.

“He had been on a boat fishing Saturday night with his girlfriend when a wave struck the boat and he fell into the lake at about 6:30 p.m.,” McQuary said.

McQuary said O’Daniel’s girlfriend, Carla James, saw him come up to the surface with an arm outstretched and threw a rope to him, but he made no attempt to grab it, and went back under the water.

Rescue crews searched the area throughout the day on Sunday with no success. The body was discovered early Monday morning by Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Jimmy Wooley, McQuary said.
