Cards for military servicemen and women will be collected until the end of day Thursday as the Corsicana Visitors' Bureau and residents join the "10,000 for the Troops" card drive along with Cumulus Radio Station KSCS New Country 96.3 FM Dallas.
The card drive is working to collect 10,000 cards for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq for shipment this holiday season. The station’s morning show hosts, Hawkeye and Katelyn, announced their hope of getting 10,000 cards from people with messages of support by Nov. 15. The effort is in partnership with the Support Our Soldiers organization.
The Corsicana Visitors' Bureau’s holiday radio promotion is on KSCS Radio, with three weeks of radio spots promoting the small town charm of shopping, dining and activities in Corsicana. The station is also participating in Small Business Saturday, with a live remote Downtown with midday personality Michelle Rodriquez from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Visitors' Bureau invites everyone in Corsicana to join them in the effort by dropping off a card to the Chamber of Commerce during business hours, or mailing it to: 10,000 for the Troops, c/o Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, 120 North 12th St., Corsicana, TX 75110 by Nov. 14.
Chamber Director Joanna Fritz will be delivering the cards to the radio station Friday morning and will be live on the air on KSCS 96.3 FM to present them. The cards will be shipped to service members or units that are in isolated, high risk areas where troops may only receive mail once a month.
One veteran who received a card from a complete stranger told the radio station that he and many others brought some of the cards with them when they returned home, and spoke of the feeling of appreciation they felt when receiving cards.
Navarro College provided cards for guests to sign during its Veterans Day performance of Dr. Shellie O'Neal's WWII Radio Hour Show Monday night. The cards prompted so much participation that they quickly ran out.
"People doubled up with their messages, it was nice to see." stated Susan Wilson, Marketing Communications Consultant for the city of Corsicana.
Local organizers of 10,000 for the Troops expressed their appreciation for the support of Navarro College and all those who have joined the effort to provide notes of encouragement and support to American troops.
