Former students of Home Economics Teacher Vivian Hicks are invited to celebrate her 90th birthday during Vivian Hicks Day, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Martin Luther King Center.
Hicks came to Corsicana in 1952. A Jackson High School graduate, Hicks worked as a county agent before starting her career at Corsicana High School. During her tenure, Hicks became the head of the Home Economics Department at Corsicana Independent School District, where she worked for 42 years.
Hicks built a reputation of fostering positive and lifelong relationships with students, and never missed a day of work, even when receiving cancer treatments. She would schedule her Baylor University Medical Center treatments in the evening so that she could continue to teach her students.
Hicks retired from CISD in 1997.
In her personal life, Hicks was instrumental to the growth of United Methodist Church of Corsicana, teaching Sunday school. She also provides housing opportunities for low to moderate income families, so that people have a place to live.
While her 90th birthday was Aug. 7, former students and well wishers of Vivian Hicks are invited to visit her at the Center to say hello and enjoy some light finger foods.
