Corsicana will soon welcome 28 English language teachers from South Korea in February as part of the Korean Fulbright Scholars program, a seven-week program sponsored by Fulbright Korea and the Korean-American Educational Commission.
The program, conducted by the Texas International Education Consortium and the Texas Intensive English Program, began Dec. 29 and runs through Feb. 15, marking the 19th year TIEC will host this Fulbright program.
From Feb. 1 through Feb. 15, the teachers will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Corsicana and the Corsicana Independent School District to study American bilingual classrooms at Carroll Elementary School, Corsicana Middle School, and Corsicana High School. In addition, the exchange teachers will reside with local families in Corsicana, providing an immersive cultural exchange.
“This is our 19th year hosting the Korean Fulbright Scholars, and the first time the group will take part in residencies based in Corsicana,” said Dr. Heather Farmakis, Chief Learning Officer at TIEC/TIEP.
“I wanted to share our wonderful community of Corsicana with our participants,” she said. “This will be an enriching experience for all involved.”
“This experience will provide an engaging opportunity for both the Fulbright Scholars as well as for our CISD students and teachers to learn about different cultures,” said Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of Corsicana ISD. “Learning about different cultures of the world is an important part of understanding and preparing for the future.”
The Fulbright program provides international English teachers the opportunity to learn about American society and culture, participate in English teaching method classes, and develop teaching skills to improve students’ English.
The Korean Exchange Teachers began the program in Austin with five weeks of professional learning with seminars on American Culture and Teaching Culture, Applied Teaching Techniques and Materials for English as a Second Language, American Public Education, School Site Residency Preparation, Public Speaking, and Cultural Presentations.
