The Navarro County Grand Jury met for August and returned 50 indictments against 43 individuals.

The Grand Jury indicted Rogelio Ortiz, 21, for injury to a child with severe bodily injury.

He was first arrested July 22 after Navarro County Sheriff's Office investigated what Sheriff Elmer Tanner described as a “highly disturbing case.”

Corsicana Fire Rescue was dispatched to a medical emergency in Rice involving a 3-week-old child when a concern was raised about the significant level of injury to the infant, which led to the the child being air lifted to a Dallas-area hospital.

According to reports, the severity of the child's injuries were inconsistent with the story given to CFD personnel upon evaluation of the child, prompting them to request that an NCSO Deputy respond to the hospital to conduct an investigation.

Ortiz was arrested by the Dallas County Hospital District Police at the same Dallas hospital where the child was transported.

He remains in the custody of the Navarro County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

Also indicted was Mark Alan Nichols, 47, Richland's former Chief of Police, who was arrested by Navarro County Sheriff's Office July 11, charged with assault family violence-impeding breath and tampering with a witness in a family violence case.

Nichols was later released from the Navarro County Jail on bonds totaling $40,000.
