A two-vehicle crash in Trinidad on Saturday afternoon killed a 78-year-old Kerens woman, and critically injured her 83-year-old husband.
The deceased was Rita Wilson French, a passenger in the couple’s car, when it collided with a pickup at the intersection of State Highway 31 and State Highway 274, Trinidad Police Chief James Cook said.
The wreck occurred at 4:11 p.m. Cook said a Ford passenger car driven by Lowell Albert French was eastbound on State Highway 31, when it approached the State Highway 274 intersection. At the same time, a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 one-ton pickup, driven by Justino Chavez Pacheco, 22, was westbound on State Highway 31.
Cook said both drivers had a green light to through traffic, but French did not have a protected turn arrow when he attempted the left turn. The Ford was struck in the right passenger side by the Dodge pickup.
Rita French was seated on the right passenger side of the Ford when the vehicles collided. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Kelly Harris.
Lowell French was taken by helicopter to East Texas Medical Center Tyler. He was critically injured, and in the intensive care unit as of Monday afternoon.
Officer Andrew Brunette investigated the wreck for the Trinidad Police Department. He was assisted at the scene by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
