The second annual LeftyFest was held at Corsicana’s Palace Theatre Saturday. Audience members celebrated the contributions of Lefty Frizzell, a country music trail blazer, and Corsicana’s native son.
Lefty Frizzell had six number one hits including “If You’ve Got the Money (I’ve Got the Time)” and “Saginaw Michigan” between 1950 and 1964.
David Frizzell had his greatest commercial success in the 1980s with hits “I’m Gonna Hire a Wino” and a duet with Shelly West, “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.”
Accompanied by the Lefty Frizzell Tribute Band, David and Allen Frizzell thrilled those in attendance with a few of their older brother’s hits and country music standards, in addition to their own music. Allen Frizzell sang a medley of gospel country songs before he called his son Cagney to the stage.
Cagney, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee, is pursing music with his three piece band “The Nashville Cowboys.” Cagney Frizzell also sang at the inaugural LeftyFest held at Corsicana’s Jester Park in June of 2018.
The bill also included Dale Houston who said he and others are trying to bring traditional country music back.
“In a lot of ways Lefty is lucky because he had others like Merle Haggard, and David and Allen to play his stuff, and keep his memory alive.” Houston said.
