I promise I am not a psychopath.
I enjoy horror and thriller movies and true crime documentaries, but I do lead a normal life outside of that.
I say this because my last column was about Ted Bundy, and I went down the Netflix rabbit hole again and recently watched their latest hit, “Abducted in Plain Sight."
If you have not seen this, you need to.
If you ever thought you weren’t the best parent, or that your parents weren’t the best, this will change your tune.
I have never in my life been more mortified for a child than I was watching this, and while I hate to say it’s a good program due to the content of it, it is.
Netflix has become almost excellent at everything, and documentaries and true crime are no exception.
“Abducted in Plain Sight” tells the story of Jan Broberg Felt who was abducted not once, but twice, in her life – at 12 and then again at 14 – by the same man in Pocatello, Idaho.
That man was Robert Berchtold.
Robert was a close family friend and neighbor to Jan’s parents in the 1960’s and 70’s. She grew up knowing him and trusting him – as did her sisters and parents – and they all treated him and his wife like a part of their family.
He helped them around the house, they had get-togethers, and he even attended their church.
He seemed sincere, but every move he made was cool and calculated to groom the family and allow him access to Jan.
His obsession with her was unreal.
He took many photos of her as a child. He began a love affair with her mother and a sexual relationship with her father.
He was willing to go to any length to gain access to the child and her parents allowed it.
The first time he kidnapped her, he took her to Mexico and married her.
She was 12.
They eventually returned to Idaho and all the charges were dropped by her parents.
The second time he kidnapped her, she was 14.
I wish I could tell y’all how bizarre this story is without giving it away.
My jaw was on the floor watching the entire thing.
The parents say they didn’t know, but they willingly allowed this man to sleep in their child’s bed because he told them his therapist said to.
They dropped his kidnapping charges because he threatened to go public with his affair with Jan’s mother.
He convinced Jan that she must be with him in order to get pregnant and save an alien planet, like Mary did when she conceived Jesus. He even recorded “aliens” talking and played it for Jan on a tape recorder, where the “aliens” instructed her to conceive. Thankfully, she never did.
I’m telling you, it’s WEIRD.
If not for the horrific child abuse at the forefront, it’s almost comical how incredibly stupid the parents are.
I suggest that anyone give this a watch. It’s not only entertaining, but it’s also very informative about just how manipulative a predator can be.
I’m still stunned at what I saw on my television screen, and I can guarantee you that you will be too.
Prepare yourself for possibly the weirdest and most unreal true story you’ve ever heard.
