The Corsicana Public Library will host the final installment of the 2014 Summer Reading Program at 10:30 a.m. with Brett Roberts Magician. He uses humor, magic, puppetry and storytelling to encourage children to read books and learn. His goal is to entertain, while helping children to be educated and tolerant. They will learn while laughing.

The Navarro County Democratic Party will hold a meeting at 1704 Crestmont Ave., Corsicana at 7 p.m. Anyone who is interested in joining is invited to come. For more information, please call Navarro County Democratic chairman Linda Mertz at (903) 229-0095.

Wake Up! Elbert Turner is assembling a county-wide grass roots Town Hall Meeting will will take place at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave., Corsicana. Are you disgusted with the political atmosphere in Navarro County? Do you feel that your Vote does not matter? Do you understand the problems and are you interested in the solution? If you answered “yes” to any of the preceding questions, come to the meeting and get some answers!

LARAS House  (Limestone Animal Rescue and Adoption Shelter) will be holding a Pet Adoption Event at Atwoods in Corsicana from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. All dogs available for adoption will be fixed and current on shots. Adoption fee is $50.  Adoptable animals can be viewed on www.adoptapet.com and www.petfinder.com. LARAS House is a 501.c3 No Kill Animal Rescue group from Mexia, Texas.

Aug. 4

The Piecemakers' Quilt Guild of Corsicana will meet Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 at the Westhill Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 3200 Texas Highway 22 . Arrive at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and visiting. Meeting will start at 10 a.m. After a short business meeting our program will be presented by Becky, one of our members. It will be a paper piecing class and workshop. We will be making Christmas ornaments.  Bring your sewing machines and join us. Should be lots of fun. Visitors are always welcome. Please bring a sack lunch. Aug. 5

Oak Valley Crime Watch invites everyone to attend our Crime Watch meeting held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday August 5th at 6:30 pm at our Oak Valley Community Center. Dinner is served pot luck style so bring your favorite dish and recipe so we can swap! Our Sheriff's Department will give our crime report and we will eat dinner and visit. Everyone is welcome~ please keep in mind Crime Watch is non-profit and we run solely on donations.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 at the LaPradera Restaurant, 1401 West Seventh Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

The Southern Pacific Sunbeam Club will enjoy another day of food and fellowship in the cool of the Ennis IHOP at 11:30 a.m. All railroaders, both active and retired, family members of railroaders and those who love a train are welcomed. So, mark your calendar, invite a friend, and plan to make this your way to beat the summer heat.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 22 will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post on N. Beaton Street. All members are urged to attend and visitors are welcome.

Aug. 7

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at Blooming Grove Historical Society Building in Blooming Grove. Guest speaker will be Navarro County District Attorney Lowell Thompson. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Aug. 12

The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The general public is invited to attend.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.  For further information, please call 903-872-5072.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees, (NARFE), Chapter 1191, will hold its next monthly meeting at the Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana at 2508 W. Seventh Ave, (Hwy 31), on Tues. Aug. 12, 2014. The meeting will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kathleen Smith from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF), will be our speaker. The CSBF is a NASA facility that launches, tracks, and recovers large unmanned, high altitude research balloons.  You are invited to join us and learn about NARFE and the CSBF.Visitors are always welcome. Chapter meetings are the second Tuesday of each month rotating between Corsicana, Ennis and Waxahachie. NARFE represents the interests of active and retired federal employees and provides information and networking opportunities for members at the local, state and federal levels. Aug. 15

AARP will hold the  Driver's Safety Course hosted by the Senior Circle at the Navarro County Regional Hospital's meeting rooms starting at 10 a.m. and finishing at 3 p.m. Friday. The cafeteria will be available at noon for participants. The enrollment fee is $20. AARP members will get $5 off by presenting a current AARP card. The recently designed and highly acclaimed four-hour course of instruction and videos are designed for experienced drivers over 50 but everyone is invited. The goals of the course are to make seniors aware of changes that might affect their driving as they age and help them drive safer and maintain their mobility longer. It will also train seniors to recognize the signs that it may be time to consider alternate means of transportation for the sake of safety and everyone's peace of mind.  Some insurance companies give discounts to participants. Corsicana’s Eighth Annual Back to School/Stay in School Rally will be held at the IOOF Event Center, 601 N. 45th St. from 9 a.m. to noon. This event is open to youth of all ages, family members, community members, and educators. Meet CISD administrators, principals and teachers. You may be at Bowie, Carroll, Drane, Navarro, Sam Houston, Fannin, Travis or Northwest Apartments by 8 a.m. and a bus will pick you up and deliver you to the rally, then return you to the campus where you boarded after 12 noon. There will be booths for band/choir/cheerleaders, education information, Prevention booths, Navarro College, food and drink vendors, giveaways, games, activities and more.
