VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. May 19, 21, 26 and 28. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Application deadline for the Corsicana Board Diversity Program, sponsored by VOICE and Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, is May 22. The Board Diversity Program is to create opportunity, build leadership, and accelerate the involvement of ethnic minorities on the board of directors and committees of nonprofit agencies in Navarro County. Barry Masonic Lodge will be dark because of the Memorial Day holiday.



A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the War Memorial on the northwest corner of the Navarro County Courthouse lawn. There will be an unveiling of the monument in memory of William O’Brien, who was killed in action March 15, 2008, in Iraq. Everyone is invited to come to this ceremony.



A Memorial Day service will be held at 1 p.m. at the gazebo at Woodland Memorial Park, located on Roane Road, sponsored by Single Believers Ministries. The program will include the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, emcee Minister Margaret Evans, prayer by Minister Glasgow, a scripture read, a song by Todd Jones, exhortation by Navarro County Precinct 2 commissioner Faith Holt, saxophone music by Danny Phillips in memory of the late Elzie Carroll, U.S. Army Specialist E-4 Darryl White, retired 1st Sgt. Co. C 124th Cavalry Tommy Hall Jr. as keynote speaker, a song by Curtis Sparks, prayer by Pastor Dairy Johnson, a 21 gun salute by Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Les Cotten, and “Taps” by Les Grayson.

Mosaic, a local non-profit agency which serves and supports individuals with developmental disabilities, will have its first spring sports spectacular from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fullerton-Garitty Park. This will be open to the public and a fun event for the whole family. This will include sports related and art related carnival type games and activities, a food booth and a silent auction. The annual Dawg Daze of Summer Sooner Chili Cook-off will be held at Gander Mountain, benefiting the Humane Society of Navarro County. There will be a special appearance by Bill McFarlin and Star, his Brittany from CBS’ reality hit “Greatest American Dog.” Demonstrations will be given by Star and her companions Maggie and Lucille.
