Corsicana will observe National Police Week as part of a salute to law enforcement officials across the nation. The week-long celebration begins today and runs through May 20.

The official memorial ceremony will be held at 5:15 p.m., Monday at the northeast corner of the county courthouse.

Since 1994, the celebration has been a part of Corsicana history. Typically the week includes a family picnic for police and sheriff’s personnel. Police Chief G.M. Cox said the festivities generally include the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office as well as surrounding agencies.

“I’ve been a part of this celebration since I have been here,” Cox said.

In years past, a 21-gun salute as well as other celebratory events take place at the memorial.

In addition to the service, law enforcement personnel are also invited to Twin Oaks Ranch for a celebration. This years event will be on May 20.

Across not only the state but the nation, police memorial events will be held. The biggest, according to Cox, is in the nations capital.

“I went to Washington in 1991 and it is a real big deal,” the chief said.

One of the biggest celebrations is held in Austin. The state memorial is a grand spectacle, Cox said.
