Relay for Life of Navarro County is hosting “Tailgating to Finish the Fight” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Gander Mountain. The event is an organizational meeting and preview of the 2014 Relay for Life, featuring a new format for the annual fundraiser.
The goal for Relay for Life is to finish the fight against cancer. The 2014 Relay event is taking place on May 17 at Mildred High School, with a new schedule and format for the 2014 campaign.
Rather than being an overnight event, 2014 Relay will be in the afternoon and evening from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. The Survivor Reception will be at 6 p.m. with a lap around the track and recognizing those in our community who are participating to finish the fight against cancer.
The theme of “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back” will prove to be a true overall atmosphere Relay 2014 will strive to reach. There are plans in place for a memorable Luminaria ceremony participants and spectators alike won’t want to miss.
The American Cancer Society did a pilot program with an overwhelmingly positive response to the format change for Relay for Life. More families were able to participate through the entire event with it not going 24 hours straight. The message to raise awareness about services offered to the community was embraced and attendance from the community was overwhelming. All left the event with a new awareness of what Relay for Life is doing.
“Fundraising is not all we do, but all we do is dependent on the funds we raise,” said Becky Long, chairperson. “The funds raised in Navarro County stay in our county, we just need to educate our community about the services that are available and how to get them.”
Co-chairs Kay Ovalle and Long, as well as other leaders, invite anyone to attend the Tailgate Party to learn what Relay is about, the changes for 2014, and answer any questions you may have. Suggestions will be welcomed about how to make the event all it can be.
“Relay’s official kickoff will take place participating with the Corsicana Christmas Parade at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7,” Long said. “If you’re a returning team or just want to participate in the Relay experience, join us.”
