A Navarro County Grand Jury indicted Roger Randall Valentine, 53, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office deputy who confessed to the sexual assault of an inmate in Corsicana while transferring her from Gatesville to Marshall in March.
Valentine was arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers in Marshall, Texas that same month then resigned his position with Harrison County in April.
According to reports, Valentine picked up a female inmate from the Woodman Unit in Gatesville and began transferring her to the Harrison County Jail in Marshall.
Upon her arrival, the inmate told Harrison County Jail staff that Valentine sexually assaulted her while in Corsicana.
“The Criminal Investigations Division was immediately notified along with Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Deputy Brandon Fletcher and Harrison County Sheriff Tom McCool,” Fletcher said in a press release. “The inmate was transported to Tyler for a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination exam where DNA was collected to be examined.”
Fletcher said Valentine was immediately suspended from his deputy position while the investigation preceded, which included Valentine being interviewed by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division Capt. Floyd Duncan.
“Evidence from Valentine along with DNA was also collected,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher then said he notified Harrison County District Attorney Reed McCain of the allegations, along with Texas Ranger Josh Jenkins.
Fletcher said Valentine was then interviewed again about the sexual assault by Capt. Duncan and a confession from Valentine was obtained. After his confession, Valentine resigned his deputy position with the county.
