The Corsicana Police Department and Corsicana Fire and EMS responded to the 400 block of South 34th Street in reference to an unresponsive child Saturday, Aug. 10. Upon arrival, officers located the body of a child around four years old inside the home.

According to the department's press release, the reporting person said that around 12 hours earlier, the child pulled a large boiling pot of water from the stove, which covered her head, torso, arms and other areas of her body.

The reporting person said she was not in the room at the time and she treated the child herself and did not seek any medical attention.

The Corsicana Police Criminal Investigative Division gathered all available evidence, interviewed all residents at the location and requested an autopsy on the deceased child. The preliminary results from the Medical Examiner indicated that the child died due to the injuries sustained from the boiling water.

Detective Cpl. Garrett Harrell obtained an arrest warrant for Juana Marquez, 42, for Abandoning or Endangering a Child, a second degree felony.

CPD arrested her Monday, Aug. 12 and she is currently being held in the Navarro County jail with bond set at $50,000.
