The table is set at the District 9 Freshman Tournament in Athens.

And a pair of Richland-Chambers teams sit at the head of it. Bob Pritchett’s Navarro Bulldogs and Bud Renfro’s Dawson Bulldogs renew acquaintances with a spot in Friday’s title game on the line when they meet 8 p.m. Thursday in a battle of the tourney’s only two unbeaten squads.

The Navarro Bulldogs stopped Randy Burkey’s Corsicana Giants, 4-1, while Dawson beat yet another league champion — this time the Tri-Cities American League winners — the Mabank Bulldogs.

Mike Russell’s Corsicana Bulldogs stayed alive in the loser’s bracket with a victory against the Mabank Redhawks. Scores were not available late Wednesday night from the Corsicana Bulldogs-Mabank Redhawks contest or the Dawson Bulldogs-Mabank Bulldogs game.

Navarro Bulldogs 4, Corsicana Giants 1

Navarro played effective small ball to get past the Corsicana Giants, 4-1, late Wednesday night.

Nic Shimonek pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and only four hits allowed in what was another pitcher’s duel, Pritchett said. Shimonek and Anthony McQuary paced the Bulldogs (16-1) at the plate.

The Corsicana Giants (11-7) play 5:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game, and again at 8 p.m. if they are victorious.
