SAN MARCOS — Texas State junior and Corsicana native Jeremy Castillo garnered Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after the Bobcats’ 38-21 win Nov. 12 at Stephen F. Austin.

Castillo recorded nine tackles, including two solo stops and one tackle for loss. The linebacker also posted one pass break-up to help the Bobcats get past the Lumberjacks. The win locked up Texas State’s first eight-win season since making the move to I-AA in 1984, and also marked the Cats first win in Nacogdoches since 1991.

Castillo was also instrumental in helping Texas State clinch a share of its first-ever Southland Conference championship Saturday with a 26-23 overtime win over Sam Houston State.

On Sam Houston’s first drive of the second half, Castillo intercepted a pass thrown by Wade Pate at the Bearkats’ 39-yard line. The defensive play allowed fellow ex-Tiger Stan Jones to boot a 33-yard field goal to cap the drive and put the Bobcats up 13-3.

Texas State (9-2) was awarded the No. 4 seed in the 16-team NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. The Bobcats will play host to Georgia Southern Saturday, with the kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. The game will be the second part of a Division I-AA doubleheader carried by ESPN2.
