Any coach can tell you, defense wins championships.

The Navarro Lady Bulldog soccer team used a dominating defense and a killer instinct to defeat Cedar Valley 6-0 at home Monday afternoon, allowing only four shots on goal.

“That was one of the most dominating performances I’ve seen this year,” head coach Debbie Bonner said.

“I was really impressed with our midfielders and defense. They controlled the field.”

The Lady Bulldogs (3-0-1) got a total 24 shots at the Cedar Valley goalkeeper while the Navarro defense only gave Cedar Valley just four looks at the goal.

Robin D’Argo scored two goals and one assist while Silvia Chapa added a pair of goals to lead the Lady Bulldogs. D’Argo’s two goals came in the second half.

Leading 2-0 at halftime, D’Argo took just 43 seconds in the second half to put Navarro up 3-0 on a pass from Mollie Reeves.

D’Argo added the final goal with 6:20 left in the game on Reeves’ second assist in the game.

“I thought we did a very nice job of passing the ball and following through,” Bonner said.

Navarro took control of the game from the kickoff and allowed only three Cedar Valley shots in the first half.

Goalkeeper Jessica Winters had a light day in goal and saved all six Cedar valley attempts. Assistant coach Aric Bonner said although Winters had a light day, she came up with three really strong saves.

The Lady Bulldogs got onto the scoreboard first with 20:12 left in the first half when

Chapa took a pass from Alysa Pleiner and put it in the upper left corner of the goal.

Navarro extended their first half lead when Shanice Watson got a deflection from Cedar Valley goalkeeper Jelisa Erwin and rolled it into the goal. D’Argo picked up the assist on the shot.

Aside from D’Argo’s two second half goals, Watson added an unassisted goal with 12:25 left in the game and then assisted with Chapa’s second goal with 7:21 left in the game.

Navarro won three corner kicks to Cedar Valley’s one and also dominated in offsides calls with a total of seven for the game.

The No. 7 Lady Bulldogs will continue their quest for a fourth trip to the national finals and fifth straight Region XIV championship Thursday at home against Richland.
