MILDRED -- Mildred's Lady Eagles completed a dramatic run to the playoffs Tuesday night by sweeping Blooming Grove in their final district game, climbing into a tie for fourth place.
The Lady Eagles stormed through the second half of the district schedule, winning four of their last five games, and with the victory over BG they tied Palmer for the fourth and final playoff berth.
Mildred will play Palmer at 2 p.m. Saturday at Corsicana High School and the winner will advance to the Class 3A playoffs.
"The girls have battled their way back into a playoff opportunity by going 5-2 the second round of district," said Mildred coach Lawayne Siegert, who turned the program around when he arrived last year. "I'm very proud of each of these girls and the way they fought.
"The first round of district did not unfold the way we would like, but the girls fought hard to get back into contention.
"They had two choices -- step up and fight or coast to the end of district play," he said. "They chose to step up and fight."
Lilly Hanna, who has led Mildred at the net all year, led again with eight kills, and Kenli Dalton and Abby Huitt both had big games setting up the offense. Dalton had 13 assists and Huitt had 12 assists.
Nikki Turner, Landry Fleming and Huitt led the defense with eight digs each, and Amy Adamson had two blocks to help Mildred to the sweep, 25-9, 25-18 and 30-28.
Mildred is now 23-16 for the season and 8-6 in the district race.
