New Hubbard athletic director Joe Heckathorn didn’t waste any time completing all of his coaching hires before the new school year begins, looking toward Blooming Grove to fill two key positions.

Heckathorn tabbed Brian Coffman as the Jaguars’ new boys basketball coach and Sam Scribner as the school’s new baseball coach.

Coffman was as an assistant basketball coach at Blooming Grove. Scribner was the softball coach at Blooming Grove.

Both Coffman and Scribner were approved by the Hubbard Independent School District board last week. Hubbard also hired Cal Bickam has its track coach and John Kirk as its defensive coordinator for football. Coffman, Scribner and Bickam will all be football assistants.

Heckathorn, who was hired as the new AD/football coach last month, said his search centered on finding coaches who had a passion for their sport. Coffman for one made a lot of sense, Heckathorn said.

“He had a great interview,” Heckathorn said. “I was looking for someone to come in and show some passion about the basketball program. I feel like we’re going to be real competitive.”

Scribner, who spent a year at Blooming Grove, fit the criteria for Hubbard’s baseball program.

Heckathorn played four years in college at Kansas Wesleyan and Sul Ross, so he knows his baseball. Hubbard already has a successful softball program under Mike Saucke.

“Sam wanted to get back to the boys side,” Heckathorn said. “You will see our facilities improve. Both he and Saucke will fight for their programs.”

Coffman, who will be a head coach for the first time, said that he noticed that Hubbard was restructuring its athletics program and that interested him.

“This presented a chance to follow my dream,” said Coffman, a Baylor graduate. “Hubbard has such a strong community who supports our athletics' programs. The fans mean a lot in the fight for victory in close games.”

Scribner was coaching baseball before he switched to softball, so the move made sense for him.

“I missed baseball a little bit,” he said. “I thought I’d get my feet back in it again.”
