The Lady Jaguars of Hubbard defeated the Lady Panthers of Mart in four sets to make the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Lady Jaguars won the match, 25-18, 16-25, 25-18, 25-21.

“This is a new experience,” head coach Vicki Fletcher said. “Three years ago we didn’t win one game all season.”

Hubbard (16-10, 8-5) will open the playoffs against Chilton at 7 p.m. Monday.

Mart started off the first game of the match by jumping out to a 6-3 lead. Mart would extend its lead to 8-4 before Hubbard would call a timeout. After that, led by Angel Parham, Hubbard went on a 9-0 scoring run before Keke Costley of Mart blocked a kill to end the run.

After Hubbard’s run both teams would split the next eight points. Mart called its first timeout of the game facing game point. Hubbard would go on to win the game 25-18.

“We started slow,” Fletcher said. “We were very nervous going into the game, because we knew the importance of it.”

The second game started off with Mart jumping to a quick 5-1 run. Hubbard called its second timeout is called after Mart extended its lead to seven. Mart and Hubbard would go on to split the next eight points putting Hubbard down 14-7.

Mart would go on to bring the score to game point with the score, 24-15. It would take Mart two tries before the Lady Panthers would put away Hubbard, 25-16.

The Lady Jaguars came into the third game with a different attitude.

“It wasn’t as easy as we thought,” co-captain Sara Fletcher said. “We realized we needed to step it up.”

The Lady Jaguars did just that jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Hubbard continued to blow by Mart until Costley again stopped Hubbard’s momentum. Hubbard jumped to a 23-17 lead. Hubbard would close out game three, 25-18.

“They kept fighting,” Fletcher said of her team’s performance. “They did exactly what I wanted them to do.”

Hubbard entered the fourth game with Mart’s back against the wall. Mart would jump out to an early lead over Hubbard, 7-3. Hubbard would win the next four of five points to cut the deficit to one. Hubbard would fight for every point bringing the game back to even at 15.

Mart would call another timeout this time with Hubbard leading 20-18. At that time the Hubbard fans began chanting, “Let’s make history!”

The match and Hubbard’s playoff berth was sealed with a kill by sophomore Kiona Johnson.

One of the happiest of all to get in the playoffs were the team captains Angela Parham and Sara Fletcher.

“It feels good to get in the playoffs,” co-captain Angel Parham said.

“It’s exciting to know that we get to start something before we left,” Fletcher said. “It was just a leading everyone. Everybody did very well on their own.”

Now comes the playoffs.

“If we play our game I think we’ll do fine,” Parham said.
