Jacque Sims keeps serving aces and Blooming Grove keeps winning.

The Lady Lions won their 11th game in a row Tuesday defeating Italy, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-17). Sims, a senior hitter, had a team-high 7 service aces frustrating the Lady Gladiators (5-12, 0-2 in District 20-2A).

“She’s really stepping up and taking control of the team,” said Kelsie Tipping, who had 7 assists and 11 kills.

“It’s awesome because we needed someone to step up.”

Four of the last six points in the second set came from Sims aces. But that was nothing compared to a 25-0 defeat of Penelope Friday where Sims never gave up her serve.

“That 25 was real cool,” Tipping said. “She’s really been working on it in practice and it’s really been showing.”

Sims is part of the reason Blooming Grove is thinking of another district title this season. Her serving has improved since the beginning of the season, where the Lady Lions started 6-6.

“She’s been working hard on that,” Blooming Grove coach Bridgett Melton said. “I’ve kind of been spot-serving, she’s done a good job with that.”

Melton points on the back of a binder where she wants Sims to serve the ball. She said Sims is getting almost pin-point accurate with the technique. Melton was still beaming from Sims’ play on Friday.

“That’s hard to do,” said Melton of Sims’ 25-point sweep. “I don’t care what level it is.”

Sims wasn’t the only Lady Lions player to have a good day serving. Blooming Grove had 12 aces in the three-set victory — Christa Lauden had three of those along with 5 kills.

It was a frustrating loss for Charles Donahoe, who is the third coach of the Italy volleyball team in four years.

“Our biggest problem is passing the volleyball,” Donahoe said. “We just struggled with the passing, but yeah, their serve had something to do with how we passed.”

It wasn’t a perfect game for the Lady Lions.

After a second-set victory, Blooming Grove fell behind 5-10 in the third set.

“It was kind of ugly at times, but I thought Jacque and Kelsie had good games at the net,” Melton said.

Sims had 7 kills and 7 assists. Michaelle Pelzel had a team-high 2 blocks for the Lady Lions, who improved to 17-6 overall and 2-0 in District 20-2A..

Notes: Briana Sims, Jacque’s sister had 3 kills and an ace.

Sarah Rodgers had an ace and Becca Bennett had a kill.
