The Lady Tigers had their struggles, but were able to pick up their second straight district win at home Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers’ got past the Waco High Lady Lions 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) at Tiger Gymnasium.

Nikki Collier came up big in the middle, recording 11 kills while Amari Dowell finished with 10 kills and seven blocks.

“We made too many unforced errors,” Lady Tigers’ coach Mike McQuiston said. “To be a good team you can’t do that.

“To be able to beat any of the next five teams we have to beat we can’t do that.”

After taking an eight-point lead against the Lady Lions in Game 1, the Lady Tigers allowed Waco to crawl back to within four.

Collier and Audrey Cain put an end to the Waco rally with two kills a piece as the Lady Tigers went on to win 25-19.

The Lady Tigers again jumped out to a big lead in Game 2, only to have the Lady Lions fight their way back.

Three consecutive kills by Waco’s Tyson Shores along with a kill from Jasmine Evans put the Lady Lions behind 23-21. But Lady Lions errors allowed the Lady Tigers to take the second game 25-21.

Sophomore Halle Ledet got involved for the Lady Tigers in Game 3, recording three of her six total kills as the Lady Tigers took a 14-9 lead.

With a 24-14 match-point lead, the Lady Tigers were stalled by errors and a relentless performance by Waco’s Shaquille Chaney, who kept the Lady Lions involved with two timely kills.

But Collier was able to finish things off with her fourth kill of the game to keep the Lady Tigers’ playoff hopes alive.

“We need to play a higher level of volleyball,” McQuiston said. “We should be more dominate in these games.

“Making those kinds of mistakes in close games is what separates a good team from a playoff team. And I still think we can be a playoff team.”

The Lady Tigers will remain at home Friday against the 2007 state champions — Waco Midway.

The Lady Tigers’ junior varsity took care of business against Waco as well, winning their match 2-0 (25-19, 25-17) earlier in the afternoon.
