Briana Cleveland was a little shy as Tuesday’s game concluded. Two points shy, that is.

The Lady Tigers senior was two-points away from tying her career high by scoring 18 points against 17-3A Waco Connally Lady Cadets, as the Lady Tigers remain perfect at home with a 50-34 win at Tiger Gymnasium.

Cleveland said she only needed to find her rhythm to get going.

“At first I wasn’t really making it,” Cleveland said. “But coach said to keep shooting it until I make it.”

Lady Tigers coach Laura Walker-Holmes was surprised when she was informed about Cleveland’s offensive output.

“That’s what I need from Bri,” the second-year coach said. “She is a very consistent player, and when she shoots she’s going to make 30 to 40 percent of those which is good for an outside shooter.

“She’s a senior. She’s a leader and we need her to play well to win.”

It was good guard play that led the charge against the Lady Cadets (1-1), as the Lady Tigers (2-1) began to gradually extend their lead during the second quarter.

Tigers guard Capricia Jones drove the length of the court and laid the ball in with 15 seconds remaining in the first half to extend their lead to 27-18. Seconds later, freshman guard Amber Ames stole the inbound pass underneath her own basket and went back up for the lay-up to lead the Lady Tigers into the locker room with an 11-point cushion.

“It’s like I was telling the team, if we’re going to win, it’s going to be defense,” Walker-Holmes said. “We’re not a very strong offensive team. We get a lot of points off of our defense.”

Walker-Holmes said she was impressed with the way Ames came on this game and how the freshman is beginning to use her speed to help on defense. Cleveland said that’s one thing that this team needs.

“We’re doing real good at pressing, but when the ball’s on the other side, we need to learn how to help each other on defense. That’s the only problem we have,” Cleveland said.

The Lady Cadets began to surge back, as Corsicana came out of the locker room cold. They didn’t get back on the scoreboard until six minutes into the third quarter, when Shayla Mullin drained a three-pointer.

Any efforts the Lady Cadets had for getting their team back into it were squashed by the 18 points the Lady Tigers poured on in the fourth quarter. Senior post Michelle Portis added four of her nine points in the fourth. Again, Corsicana’s height advantage proved to be an advantage on the undersized Lady Cadets, as Portis crashed the boards for eight rebounds, while Brittany Winfrey provided 10.

Notes: The Lady Tigers varsity matchup with Class 5A Grand Prairie has been moved to 5 p.m., due to the Tiger football playoff game ... the Lady Tigers junior varsity and freshman teams lost their games to the Lady Cadets, 35-28 and 36-24, respectively.

Cleveland finished the night confidently from the free-throw line, as the senior buried six of her eight attempts.
