CANTON – Mildred likened its miracle season to a train at Thursday night’s community pep rally.

Friday, the train ran out of steam.

Lone Oak had 400 yards of offense and an answer every time Mildred tried to erase an early two touchdown deficit in a 28-10 win at Birdwell Stadium.

The Eagles (6-5) found themselves in a 14-0 hole one play after an interception deep in their own territory late in the first half. After getting their first points on a 33-yard field goal late in the third, Lone Oak (9-2) answered with a touchdown in less than two minutes.

Again, the Eagles got back into the game, getting a 26-yard Daniel Folsom touchdown run early in the fourth. Four minutes later, the Buffaloes answered.

“We played well early,” said coach Patrick Harvell, who led his team to five straight wins to end the season, and six of seven, to share the District 14-2A title.

“The interception changed the tide of the game,” he added. “You feel a lot more comfortable with a 14-0 lead. Your playbook expands.”

And the defense pins its ears back.

Mildred had minus-3 yards of offense after the first quarter, 26 at the half, 16 on the ground on 13 attempts.

“They had the best defensive line we faced all season,” senior lineman Drew Burnett said. “They were bringing a lot of heat and we could not pick it up.”

But, the Eagles had been down at the half in three of its biggest wins. Second-half adjustments made differences, and it did early on in the final 24 minutes Friday.

Mildred went 88 yards on its second possession of the second half to get on the board. Folsom had a run of 26 and Payton Weaver had another smashing romp of 16. On third and 4, Folsom hit Rody Seilheimer for 16 yards to the Buffalo 15. The drive ended with Owen, who made a field goal in the seventh straight game.

But Lone Oak got a 28-yard kickoff return from Eagle-killer Trenton Overly and a 15-yard facemask penalty to set up shop at the Mildred 40. On second and 22, cool-handed sophomore Trever Lasseter hit Overly down the right sideline for 47 yards. One play later, Lasseter carried in from five yards and it was 21-3.

“They made plays and we made a few mistakes,” Harvell said. “And, we didn’t take advantage of opportunities.”

Lasseter was 16 of 20 for 159 yards and a touchdown.

Mildred’s next drive started with a false start, but Folsom went 23 yards on first down. Weaver followed with 12 yards and 9, and Folsom 11 on third and 1. Two plays later, he covered the final 26, and Mildred was right back in it.

“We got to 21-10, and I thought if we could hold them there, and get the ball back, we could get points and tighten it up” Harvell said. “We just didn’t have a defensive answer.”

The first blow on the ensuing drive game when Devonta Cooper bulled his way for 42 yards to the Mildred 23. He had 149 yards on 20 carries.

The final blow came when Overly scored from 4 yards out, his second of the night, and fifth touchdown in two games versus Mildred.

“We hit them in the mouth, and they’d hit us in the mouth. It was a good game,” said Weaver, who had 44 yards rushing.

Weaver looked back on a season that began with an 0-3 start.

“I’ll remember beating Edgewood and Kerens,” he said, “and this team coming together after (a 27-6 loss to) Wortham.

“It was a great team.”
