WORTHAM — Mildred and Wortham’s annual battle has become routine.

Lot’s of big hits, lot’s of drama and lately, lot’s of Eagles wins.

Mildred made it five in a row over the Bulldogs with a 41-14 win at Bulldog Stadium.

There were two 100-yard rushers, 17 penalties and a slew of injuries. In the end, much like the last few years, the Class 2A Eagles (2-1) just had too much for a depth-challenged Wortham squad.

“We played a decent second half,” said Wortham coach J.P. Gillen, who saw his squad fall to 1-1. “Our offense put our defense in a bad situation near the 20, but other than that, we went heads up with them.

“We just got beat by a better team.”

The fumble that set up a 26-yard drive early in the fourth was the second of two miscues Gillen eluded to. The other came after his team closed to within 15-8 on a 31-yard Jake Jones-to-DeAndre Thomas touchdown pass with 7:54 left. Thomas played quarterback for all but three snaps, including the touchdown and successful conversion pass between the same duo.

However, 11 seconds after the touchdown, it was 21-8 when Mildred’s Kevin Barlow returned the kickoff 84 yards up the middle for the touchdown.

“We worked all week on not kicking to Barlow,” Gillen said.

Teams refused to kick to Barlow after the fifth game last year. He also did damage on the ground, rushing 10 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns, including one from 71 yards that put Mildred up 7-0 with 2:20 left in the first.

Cory Roper and Dang Nguyen added touchdown runs, and Tyler Drennon hit freshman receiver Thomas McDonald on a 24-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter as the Eagles had their best night through the air.

Drennon went 2 of 5 for 56 yards and an interception, and Roper — with whom Drennon rotates — completed all three of his passes to three different receivers, all for first downs.

Still, the Eagles had nine of the 16 penalties, four of which gave Wortham first downs. They also fumbled six times, but managed to hold on to them all, and had two extra points blocked.

Coming off a 30-0 loss to Hillsboro last week, coach Joe Drennon said he would take the win.

“We did a lot of good things, but we’ve got some mistakes to eliminate,” Drennon said. “The effort was great, the enthusiasm was better and we played harder.”

Nathan Burks led Wortham with 120 yards rushing, including an 8-yard score on fourth down. He also left the field injured once, along with Brian Buchmeyer, who missed several minutes in third after injuring his right leg.
