The Dawson 12-U Lady Bulldogs girls softball team is playing in the Texas Teenage Softball Association's state tournament in Clifton this week.
The Dawson girls earned the berth to the state tournament by finishing second in their district this season.
They beat Rice 13-3 in the district tournament opener and then -- after their second game was rained out -- came back the next day and beat Maypearl 10-6 to stay in the winners' bracket.
The fell behind unbeaten Palmer in their third game 10-0, and then fought back to lose 12-7. They took the momentum of the comeback against Palmer and played their rivals, the Corsicana Shock, immediately after the loss to Palmer, and beat the Shock in a dramatic back-and-forth game 14-13 in extra innings in a game that didn't end until almost 1 a.m.
"The girls showed pure heart and determination and just wanted it more," Dawson coach Tracy Miller said.
Dawson's 12-U Lady Bulldogs are the first to advance to a TTSA state tournament from Dawson since 2002.
