Jazaria Jones bounces down the track like she was on springs, giving a whole new meaning to the term hip-hop.
The 6-year-old never stops smiling —or maybe it just seems that way, or just feels that way.
She’s the youngest and one of the most talented kids on this year’s Team Supreme track team, a group hard-working youngsters who make a name for themselves every summer on the track.
Those Team Supreme kids are at it again this summer, and for the 16th year in a Terry Douglas’ children (that’s what he calls them) have had a tremendous season on the track and are headed for the culmination of summer this weekends when they compete in the state meet in College Station.
Little Jazaria is one of 45 Supreme kids who will compete in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation State Games Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Every year Douglas sends dozens to the state meet, and this summer has been no different as another fast and furious group of Corsicana athletes head for state.
“This is another real good group of children,” Douglas said during practice at Tiger Stadium on Monday night. Douglas has been running the summer track program since 2003 and helped hundreds of youngsters in Navarro County.
“We’re looking good in all of the divisions,” he said. “This is one of the most balanced teams we’ve had. We have a lot of children who love to run.”
Douglas said Team Supreme had 10 relay teams (boys and girls) do well at the Region Meet at Baylor in Waco last weekend, and added that there’s a lot of individual talent headed to College Station.
They took home 55 medals at the Region Meet, claiming 17 gold, 21 silver and 17 bronze medals
“We will be well represented at state,” Douglas said.
Jarell Jennings has the top qualifying times in the 16-U boys division in the 3,200 meter run, the 1,600 meter run and the 800 meter run.
Jayden Jones has the top qualifying time n the 100 and the third fastest time in the 200 and also runs on the sprint relay (4x100) relay team that has the top qualifying time in the 14-U boys division. That team is comprised of Javin Thomas, Jones, Travon Johnson and Sydney Polk.
The boys 16-U 4x100 relay team of Christian Govan, Kardarian Smith, Jaylon Hernandez and Jared Brakens has the second fastest qualifying time time going to state.
Jot Grant is one of the top 12-U boys qualifiers in distance runs, where he has the second best time in the 800.
The Team Supreme girls 14-U 4x100 relay team of Amyriah Johnson, Kendraya Johnson, Aniyah Young and Jazmine Newsome is one of the top qualifying times in the sprint relay.
And little Jazaria Jones has one of the fastest times in the girls 6-U division in both the 50-meter and the 100-meter dash.
